Gulangyu

Gulangyu is situated southwest of Xiamen Island, facing the city center across the 600-meter-wide Lujiang Channel. It covers an area of 1.87 square kilometres and is home to Chinese and western architectures and famous tourist attractions such as Sunlight Rock, Shuzhuang Garden and Harmonium Museum.

Protestants started several churches on Gulangyu including China's first Protestant Church in 1848. Many well-known missionaries and mission doctors came to Xiamen, such as Sir Patrick Manson, the Father of Tropical Medicine and the founder of the original London School of Tropical Medicine. He took an early interest in medical education, founding the first western-style medical school in China and lived in Xiamen for several years.

Gulangyu is also known as “Piano Isle” because it has more pianos per capita than any other city in China - over 350 pianos, or one in every five homes. There is a piano museum in Shuzhuang Garden displaying more than 40 ancient pianos collected by Hu Youyi, a patriotic overseas Chinese.
